Being back in Asgard hurt - of course, being anywhere would have hurt, but it wasn't where he'd expected to go when Ashildr activated the teleport. Though it was obvious time had passed since he'd last been in the city, it was still familiar; he could still recognise all the spots he and Clara had visited when they'd returned after Ragnarok, all the places where they'd spent time together. He'd been hoping to channel his rage into destroying whoever had brought about Clara's death, not land in the middle of a celebration.

A celebration was the very last thing he wanted right now.

And so he stalked through the crowd irritably, trying to find a space that wasn't full of revelers, somewhere quiet where he could just mourn. He wasn't paying attention to his surroundings - not till he heard a crash behind him, and a small yelp in a tone he remembered. Then he whirled around in a flash of burgundy velvet, pain etched in every line of his face. "Clara?"

She really didn't want their reunion to go like this. She hadn't been expecting one at all, and now it seemed she was faced with a Doctor that most definitely remembered her. A Doctor wearing red velvet that remembered her. Her eyes widened when she realized what that meant, and all she could do is stare up at him and nod dumbly.

She had no idea what to say to him, and even as she climbed up to her feet she wasn't able to come up with anything. She took a moment to dust off the backside of her blue waitress outfit and continued to stare over at him. The staring lasted for a few moments longer before she felt tears in her eyes. In an effort to hide them (and just because she really wanted to), she hurried forward to wrap her arms around him.

A hug wasn't necessarily the best response to running into him like this, but it was all she had to offer.

Clara was alive. The thought rushed through his mind, took over his entire body, and before he quite realised it, he was hugging her tightly, sweeping her off her feet in a bone-cracking embrace. But once the initial shock wore off, he knew what must have happened: however they'd come here, it must have been from different points in their respective timelines. He didn't remember Clara wearing a blue dress like this, but maybe it was from a time she'd been without him. It was possible.

He shoved back the tears that threatened to overwhelm him; if Clara was from the past, then he couldn't let her know about her future, couldn't break down like he wanted to. Instead, he had to pretend that everything was perfectly normal.

"I'm glad you made it," he said once he finally let go, forcing a smile. "I couldn't enjoy the celebration without you." That much was true, anyway.

Unfortunately, she wasn't so easy to convince. She knew exactly when he started wearing the red velvet and it was from a very distinct time that was awful for the both of them. So she gave him a look that said she didn't believe him, accompanied with a small shake of her head.

"Liar."

She reached out to hit at his chest, as if this all were his fault. It wasn't his fault though, and she knew it. So she quickly wiped at the tears that were trickling down her face. "You're surprised to see me here. Admit it." She had seen his face and heard his tone of voice as he said her name.
